What It Actually Does
SE Live Blog runs in two modes from a single component: Sports and News.
In Sports mode, it becomes a live match centre. The match header displays a full-width score panel with competition name, round, venue, team names, and logos. Scores update automatically via AJAX polling — a lightweight mechanism that calls the server once per interval regardless of how many visitors are watching, thanks to a built-in micro-cache layer. When a new entry is posted, visitors see a notification bar and can optionally hear a sound chime. The feed pulls in new content without a page reload.
The sport-specific scoring goes deeper than a simple scoreline. The admin provides a purpose-built breakdown editor for each sport format:
- Rugby — tracks tries, penalty tries, conversions, penalties, and drop goals, computing the headline score automatically
- Tennis — tracks sets and derives the set count from completed sets only, so an in-progress set doesn't incorrectly advance the scoreline
- American Football / Ice Hockey — quarters and periods are summed to produce the aggregate
- Baseball — innings are tallied automatically
- Cricket — operates on innings detail rather than a headline figure, as the format demands
Football (soccer) and other simple formats take a direct score entry, as there's no breakdown to derive from.
In News mode, SE Live Blog becomes a conventional rolling live blog — ideal for elections, product launches, conferences, or any time-sensitive coverage. Both modes share the same entry editor, the same polling infrastructure, and the same sound notification and live viewer count features.
The Module
The package includes mod_seliveblog, a sidebar-ready scoreboard widget. It polls independently and updates scores, match status, and period detail live without any interaction from the visitor. Put it on your homepage, in a sidebar, or anywhere a module position exists.
No Dependencies, No Lock-In

Performance at Scale
The micro-cache is worth understanding if you're expecting a meaningful audience. Rather than hitting the database on every visitor's poll request, the component serves a cached JSON response for the configured interval (default 8 seconds, configurable). The database is only queried once per interval per feed, regardless of concurrent visitors. In testing this handles several hundred simultaneous viewers on standard shared hosting without strain. For larger audiences — sustained 1,000+ concurrent per feed — a VPS with OPcache enabled is the sensible choice, but that's true of any dynamic Joomla content at that scale.
What It Doesn't Do (and Why That's Fine)
It's worth being straight about the architecture. SE Live Blog uses AJAX polling, not WebSockets. Updates reach visitors on the next poll interval rather than the millisecond a goal is scored. With a 10–30 second interval, that's imperceptible in practice for the majority of use cases — a sports club covering Sunday's match, a news site live-blogging a local election count, or a conference publisher running session notes. If you're running a broadcast operation requiring sub-second latency to ten thousand concurrent viewers, you're in a different category of infrastructure entirely.
Score data is also entered manually. There's no live feed integration from data providers. For most clubs and publishers this is exactly what you want — editorial control, no API costs, no third-party dependency to go offline mid-match.
